Stories from Frankfurt

A New Chapter Has Begun!

Since the beginning of the year, I (Tim), along with Christian (pictured on the right), have taken on the leadership of our missionary team in Frankfurt. Mariel will also mentor a few missionaries. How did this come about?

Some time ago, we were invited to join the leadership team for our team in Frankfurt. At the same time, it had been planned for some time that the team leader would pass on their role to another missionary. However, for understandable reasons, this person is unable to take on the leadership role.

Mariel and I have experienced our team and the vision the team has for our city as a tremendous blessing. We have a deep desire for our team to continue being a blessing for God’s Kingdom here in Frankfurt. At the same time, we see how God has been preparing us over the past few years for new steps. For example, through my contributions to the Main Project, I have built many relationships with pastors and leaders in our city.

For these reasons, we have decided that I (Tim) will take on part of the team leadership role. I will assume the role of Focus City Leader, primarily responsible for the vision within our team, partnerships in the city, and leading the team in this context. I am excited about this opportunity to help our team in Frankfurt reach its full potential and to be a bridge to our city.

If you would like to support us in this mission, we would be delighted for you to join our team!

Insights in the mLeben Closing Event

Mid of November, we gathered for the mLeben closing event – a morning filled with encouragement, sharing, and fellowship. Alongside inspiring testimonies and heartfelt prayer, we also took time to celebrate with a shared meal among all the participants.

Testimonies That Inspire

One of the highlights was hearing the stories shared by participants from the past year. It’s incredible to see how God works through small steps in our daily lives:

  • During a prayer walk, two participants felt led by God to approach a homeless man.
  • A game night created space for a neighbor to open up about a traumatic experience. This trust became the starting point for Gospel conversations.
  • A neighbor asked a participant for prayer over a significant need – and God answered in an amazing way.
  • Someone finally found clarity on how to naturally bring Gospel conversations into everyday talks with coworkers.

These stories remind us of how God can use us when we intentionally focus on Him and remain open to His leading in our daily lives.

Praying and Celebrating Together

Another deeply moving moment was the time of prayer. Together, we prayed for one another and for our friends who don’t yet know Jesus. It was powerful to witness the hope and confidence that filled the room. To conclude, we blessed and commissioned one another to continue sharing our faith in everyday life – with courage, trust, and love.

The shared meal afterward provided space for conversations, connection, and simply enjoying fellowship. It was the perfect ending to a meaningful and inspiring morning.

Support the vision

To be able to contribute in this way in Frankfurt, Tim & Mariel are set free as missionaries. If you would like to support this vision, we invite you to join our team.

12th World Urban Forum in Cairo

In early November, I had the privilege of attending the United Nations’ World Urban Forum in Cairo – an inspiring conference focused on urbanization and cities. Together with my team leader Jason from Frankfurt, we explored urban trends and what they mean for mission work in cities.

A highlight was connecting with people who share the same heartbeat for cities worldwide – learning from each other and dreaming together. And yes, I got to visit the pyramids too!

The three key thoughts from the conference deeply inspired me what they could look like applied in our churches:

  • It all starts at home – Church begins at home.
  • It all starts together – In God’s kingdom, we work together.
  • It all starts now – The time to collaborate for the Gospel is now.

Dreaming, planning, and growing together!

At the beginning of November, we had strategy days with the Main Project in Frankfurt. As leaders, we reflected on the past two years, evaluated, and courageously looked ahead. Together with other invited leaders from the city, we dreamed about how we can grow as a network to foster a movement of the Gospel.

I’m especially excited about some concrete steps and ideas we want to implement for mLeben. Over the next few months, I’ll be working on these with a team.

Exponential Germany Conference

In October, we (Tim & Mariel) had the opportunity to attend the Exponential Germany Conference, which was centered around the theme GospelX. The main question of the conference was: How can we share the Gospel? Five key thoughts particularly inspired and challenged us. We’d like to share these insights with you.

1. We are part of a 2000-year-old movement

In Acts 1:8, Jesus says: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

We realized that we are, in fact, “the ends of the earth”—at least from the perspective of that time. Over the centuries, the Gospel has been like an invisible thread, passed from generation to generation until it reached us. And that thread worked! Now it’s our responsibility to carry it forward. How can the Gospel reach the next person through us? And how do we ensure that this movement doesn’t stop with us? These questions deeply moved us.

2. Anyone can share the Gospel—it’s not about perfection

We often think that sharing the Gospel requires special gifting or a perfectly crafted plan. But that’s a misconception. Evangelism is not an exclusive task for superheroes. The key point is trusting in the Holy Spirit as we share. When we rely on God rather than our own abilities, we are already living out the power of the Gospel. It’s about trust, not perfection. This realization gave us renewed courage.

3. Do we have Jesus’ heart for the lost?

One of the hardest questions we were asked was: “Do I weep like Jesus over the people who are lost without Him?” This question struck us deeply. In the Gospels, we see Jesus’ compassion for the lost. How about us? Are we truly moved by the fate of those around us? We’ve been encouraged to pray for our hearts to change and to be filled with Jesus’ love and urgency for the lost.

4. Dream big: Spiritual multiplication

One image that particularly inspired us comes from Bob McNabb’s book Spiritual Multiplication. He writes:

“Sometimes I imagine sitting at heaven’s gate and greeting newcomers. Leaning back in my chair and sipping lemonade, I give high fives to those I have led to Christ as they come in. After that, those they have led to Christ arrive, and I give them, my spiritual grandchildren, high fives as they enter. Then come my great-grandchildren, my great-great-grandchildren, and so on with ever growing numbers. Am I crazy for dreaming about this happening? I’m not so sure about the chair and lemonade part, but I’m in good company in hoping to see those I’ve impacted when I am with the Lord.”

This vision deeply touched us and motivated us to dream big. What if our efforts for the Gospel have an impact far beyond our own lifetime? It’s an incredible vision that gives us hope and drives us to invest in God’s Kingdom.

5. Living as senders—without fear of loss

A final point that particularly motivated us is the idea of “living as senders.” In our discipleship, leadership, and as a church, we want to be bold in sending people to plant new churches and spread the Gospel.

Sometimes we fear letting people go—especially when it comes to valuable leaders or close friends. But we’ve been encouraged to trust that God will always send new people our way when we invest in His Kingdom. Statistics even show that churches that send people out often experience healthy growth. God has promised to generously take care of us when we are willing to let go for His sake.

Conclusion: Let’s carry the Gospel forward with boldness

This conference not only strengthened us in our personal discipleship, but it also gave us a bigger vision. The message of the Gospel has gripped us anew, and we want to share it boldly and with trust. We are all part of this movement, and we all have the opportunity to contribute to ensuring it doesn’t end with us.

Let’s dream big, pray, and trust—and carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.” - A.T. Pierson

We experienced a taste of this over the last few months. At the beginning of the year, we had the opportunity to invite several Christians in our street to pray together. This has grown into a regular gathering. We are 6 Christians from 4 different churches, but united in our desire to see our shared neighbors come to know Jesus and begin to follow Him. It is a blessing to be encouraged time and again to live missionally in our shared neighborhood through the short stories and common prayers.

Our Summer

Over the summer, we (Mariel & Tim) had the opportunity to spend time with our friends who don't know Jesus yet and get to know new neighbors. A special highlight was the big local festival, where we took part in the organization and were able to experience many encounters in the neighbourhood. Another highlight was a neighborhood barbecue to which we invited our immediate neighbors. It was particularly nice to meet a neighbor who was also there last year and to have the opportunity to get to know a new African family. A real gift from God was that it didn't rain that afternoon, even though rain was forecast. God also deepened friendships, for example we got to know the family of a teenager better through various encounters. A neighbor, whom we helped a lot, gave us a gift for our first wedding anniversary by cooking for us.

News from mLeben

At the end of May, all mLeben groups gathered for a joint meeting. (mLeben is our collaborative discipleship process in Frankfurt and beyond). It was nice for the groups to experience that they are part of something bigger which is happening here in Frankfurt and to exchange ideas. At this meeting, we practiced together how we can share our faith in different situations. It feels a little unfamiliar at first and it's not about simply memorizing something and it should happen authentically. But just as a jazz musician practices for many hours in order to be able to improvise in a band, it also helps us Christians to practice again and again how we can share the gospel in different situations in order to be ready in the moments that God gives us. And of course, the Holy Spirit must be at work in everything.

Afterwards, I (Tim) also had a good time with the group leaders. It was particularly encouraging to hear what they are experiencing in their groups and how God is working in the lives of individuals. Several participants took steps in their workplace and experienced how God has given them opportunities to share their faith. One participant used a neighborhood app to invite his neighbors to cook together and has since cooked with a few neighbors, had good conversations and even motivated others from his church to join in. That encourages me a lot.

Mariel's language journey

My time in my Language School was both fun and challenging. I studied and worked with non-Filipinos before and I experienced and learned to overcome our cultural differences but learning German with my classmates made me realized that I still have a lot to learn when it comes to dealing with differences and prejudice. God had truly sustained me during these past few months.

My first two weeks in the class made me miss my teacher and classmates in my former school but as I spend more time with my new classmates and teachers, I didn’t only learn the language but also from their life stories; their motivations, dreams and aspirations here in Germany. It is truly remarkable and I saw why Frankfurt is such a special place for the Gospel. Even as I write this, I don’t know how to capture this incredible feeling I feel whenever I think about the people who God wants to reach in this city.

Finally, I passed my B1 exam which means that I can continue learning in B2 already. I took my exam last April 20 and it was during the GEM Field Retreat. Leading to the day of  my exam, I was really nervous and pessimistic of the outcome but through the prayers and encouragement of my colleagues and yours, I could relax and trust the capabilities God had given me.

Although it was a difficult journey, I will truly miss my time with my friends and teachers but I am looking forward going to my B2 class next month. I will be going to a different school and I hope that I would also be able to find good friends and develop confidence in speaking the language and just enjoy this journey God had prepared for me.

New start of mLeben

On last Saturday in January we had an exciting start into a new round of mLeben, our collaborative discipleship process!
Especially wonderful to see was the collaboration of Christians from different cultures and all generations in the groups this year. We had a time of prayer together with prayers in more than 5 languages. This year, around 45 Christians from 13 different churches are taking part in mLeben.
I hope that through them, their friends and neighbors will hear the gospel for the first time. Please pray for this. Thank you!

EUROPE IS CALLING

In January, I (Mariel) had my Candidate Orientation, a step in my application to become a missionary of GEM. I had a wonderful time with my fellow candidates; hearing their stories and their direction in their ministry. I actually feel small in this movement that God is doing in Germany but I know that my experiences in Philippines have a place in the work here and I hope that you guys be part of it.

New language school

I had my first class in my new language school in January. For the past few months, I did my language learning through GGZ Language School and it was a wonderful experience because I was able to learn with a wonderful teacher and classmates who are motivated to learn and adapt in Germany. This time, I am learning with people from different countries and stories. It is a bit difficult for me because my class had known each other since they started together in A2.1. I only joined them in our current class in A2.2. This new experience is a bit scary but I am beginning to understand God’s heart for Frankfurt.

Frankfurt is a multicultural city where 50% of its population has migration background. People came here for hopes of better opportunities and they go through the process of learning and adapting despite its difficulties. And God sees that and maybe through the Gospel movement, they can know better hope and meaning to life.
Maybe you could pray for me as I try to interact and make relationships with my classmates, it is not easy but I know that this challenge is a learning process for me too.

We celebrate together!

The first year of our collaborative discipleship process is finished and we celebrated together. I was really touched by the time when different participants shared what God has done this year. Tabea* shared how she reconnected with a friend this year who was not doing well and was able to be a blessing to her with the Gospel. Pascal* told how God opened his eyes for a friend with whom he started talking about the Gospel this year. Lisa* told how she met a mother and her son at work. At Christmas, the son asked something about Christmas and she had the chance to tell him about the true meaning of Christmas. Since then, she has spent time with them regularly.

*Names changed

An exciting year lies behind us. Christians in Frankfurt and the surrounding area have grown in their relationship with Jesus and have been empowered to share the Gospel with others. We ended the year with sending them out:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

- Acts 1:8

God lives in us with His Spirit. He has invited us to be part of the same movement; throughout the world, right into our neighborhoods and friendships. We are all part of this mission and story that begins with the creation of the world; it runs through the Bible and extends to us.

We ended the celebration with a meal and time for personal conversation.

What's next? The last few weeks I have been networking a lot and trying to get more churches and Christians excited about M-Leben. ("M-Leben" is the new name of M1, the discipleship process).
